United Way of McLean County is proud to honor longtime community leader and United Way supporter, Harriett Fuller Rust (1919-1999).

Born in Farmer City and raised in Bloomington, Illinois, Harriett Rust’s spirit of volunteerism was deeply rooted here. Her decades-long contributions and leadership touched higher education, historic preservation, and the arts.

Among her many philanthropic endeavors, Mrs. Rust served on the United Way board of directors for 37 years, including service as vice president of planning. She served as a board member and president of Victory Hall Home for Boys for more than 35 years.

Today Harriett Fuller Rust Hall at Illinois Wesleyan University stands as an enduring testament to her legacy as community leader.

A Bloomington High School graduate, Mrs. Rust attended the University of Illinois and, later, the University of Southern California, where she graduated with honors. She was married to Edward B. Rust Sr., former chairman and chief executive officer of State Farm Insurance Companies.

Because of Mrs. Rust’s belief in and commitment to our community, United Way of McLean County has named its highest philanthropic leadership society in her honor.

The Harriett Rust Leadership Society is a non-incorporated association with United Way of McLean County. Its purpose is to deepen the understanding, commitment, and financial leadership of individuals in McLean County. Members of the Society play a vital role in building a working and living environment that helps ensure quality education, financial stability, and good health. Membership in the Harriett Rust Leadership Society is granted to individuals and/or households who invest at least $10,000 annually to United Way of McLean County.
